How safe is balloon flying?

Of all the types of aircraft, Hot Air Balloons are the safest. Sky High Leisure has a 100% safety record, and all their Balloons are inspected before every flight and, after every 100 flying hours, undergo the Certificate of Airworthiness test carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority.

How fast do we fly?

A Balloon travels "with the wind" so Mother Nature decides our speed; but for passengers' safety, Sky High Leisure will only take off in a maximum wind speed of 8 knots. Don't forget, a Hot Air balloon has no brakes, so near perfect conditions are required. It has to be safe to be right!

When are flights scheduled ?

Sky High Lesiure fly 7 days a week (weather dependent of course) either early morning at the weekend, about 1 hour after sunrise and in the evening about 2 hours before sunset: for two simple reasons; the Balloon needs to be Hotter than the ambient temperature, and these are the calmest times of the day in weather terms to enable a safe and enjoyable flight.

What happens if the flight is postponed due to unsuitable weather?

No problem. All voucher types are valid for 12 months, so all passengers need to do is call our office and make a new date.

I've arranged a date, how do I know that the weather is good to fly?

Sky High Lesiure has a unique but effective system. We ask that passengers make a simple phone call to the Sky High "Flight line" after 10pm the night before a morning launch, and after 2pm on the day of an evening flight. The "Flight Line" then confirms provisional suitable weather condtions and reminds everyone of meeting times, what to wear, in fact everything, even a reminder to "spend a penny"!

This proven system has been complimented by many as it avoids the inconvenience of driving all the way to a launch site to find that the conditions aren't right and the flight is cancelled. But remember for everyone's safety the ultimate decision to fly is always made by the pilot on the launch field, in case at the last minute Mother Nature springs a surprise!

What should I wear?

Whatever you would wear to go for a walk in the country on that day! The temperature in the air is in fact a little warmer than on the ground. Why? There's a lot of central heating above your head in a Hot Air Balloon! Clothing should however be of natural fibres with full length trousers and arms. A baseball cap or flat cap is a good idea to keep your head cool from the balloon burners. Flat shoes are very important and ideally waterproof as the landing fields can be a little damp on occasion.

Am I too old or too young?

Many have celebrated a 100th birthday on a Sky High Balloon Flight!

All we ask is that passengers are in good health and fitness and declare themselves fit to fly. They must also be a minimum height of 4ft 6inches.

All passengers must be able to understand all aspects of the Safety brief given by the Pilot before departure. (Under 14 yrs must be accompanied by an adult). But please, call our office if you are over 101 yrs old and want to fly WITH your grandparents!

Can my Family and friends come and watch me take off?

It is a must. This once in a lifetime experience has to be shared by all.

We actively encouarge passengers to invite all their family and friends to help, wave off, make witty comments to the Mother in Law that it's a one way ticket if they wish! Family can also follow the Balloon in their own vehicles which makes the whole experience a truly shared event!

Should I bring my camera and video?

Of course! But don't drop it over the side because it is your responsibity.
